How to Become an AYSO Referee

Prerequisites (do these things before arriving on the day of the class):

  1. Complete your registration as an AYSO Youth or Adult Volunteer in Sports Connect (ayso41.org).
  2. Complete an online background check. (After submitting your volunteer application, look for an email from [email protected]. You must follow this link to initiate the background check.)
  3. NEW 2022 Requirement! Complete a LIVESCAN (live fingerprinting). This is a one-time process. Visit the AYSO LiveScan webpage for links to sign-up.
  4. Take the following FIVE required online training courses located in ETrainU. 
    1. AYSO's Safe Haven
    2. CDC: Concussion Course
    3. Sudden Cardiac Arrest
    4. Safe Sport at the following link: https://safesporttrained.org/?KeyName=tsVWe36Xa6PS3b5NzOug 
    5. Regional Referee - Online + In-Person Companion Course (2 Part Bundle) - (Part 1 of the 2 Part Bundle) - [Once Part 1 (Online Portion) is complete, it will allow you to schedule (Part 2) the In-Person Portion]

    6. OR Take in-person certification course (register in AYSOU/ETrainU): Regional Referee - Full In-Person Course (Under "Training Library" Tab)

Notes on Training

  1. If you have taken the online Safe Haven training in the past 3 years, this will satisfy the first training requirement (this training certification must show up in your AYSO certification credit in Sports Connect).
  2. If you have previously taken the CDC Concussion Awareness course, this will satisfy the second training requirement (this training certification must show up in your AYSO certification credit in Sports Connect).
  3. IMPORTANT: Print your certificate of completion or a screen shot at the end of each course. The may be a delay before your completion is posted to Sports Connect.
  4. Remember: Bring copies of your certificates of completion (Regional on-line referee course, Safe Haven, CDC Concussion Awareness and  Cardiac Arrest) with you to class. You will not be allowed to take the in-person class without these certificates!

It has 11 modules. 9 Content modules and 1 Test module, and the last module (module 11) is a step to enroll in the in-person companion class

The Online course MUST BE finished before attending the in-person companion class/clinic

We get on a field and review all of the restarts, Offside line following,
Assistant Referee positioning and flags, Referee signals, whistle usage and Referee
Positioning, Free Kicks and Penalty Kicks
